Simhat
Torah The days of Sukkot lead immediately to the 22nd of Tishri, called Shemini Atzeret (the Eighth Day of Solemn Assembly), followed on the 23rd of Tishri by Simhat Torah (Rejoicing of the Law). The most joyous time in the synagogue is when the last words of Deuteronomy are read to the congregation and immediately followed by the reading of the first words of Genesis. The readings are accompanied by processions in which all the scrolls of the Torah are paraded around the sanctuary; flags are often carried by children. In modern times within the liberal branches of Judaism, a second ceremony has been added called consecration. During this ceremony the beginning students are blessed and presented with an introduction to the Torah. |
