Used on Purim during the reading of the megillah, this noise maker is ivory with scrimshaw cuts of Hebrew: “Curse Haman; Esther; Purim.” The carved and cut piece of ivory is attached to an ivory shaft through which is inserted a thin metal rod and ratchet, creating the noise.
