CSU Alum Honored By President Obama
Even cancer couldn't keep Sally Pellegrin, BS '74, MA '93, away from her students. She was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in August '08 and during her 3-month treatment, she'd visit them at Clara E. Westropp Elementary School on Cleveland's West Side almost every week. It was tough on her to be away. Her passion is to give her students, who are often from economically disadvantaged homes, a glimpse into world outside their own. And President Obama took notice recently, awarding her the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Read more here.
"My life would be totally different had I not ventured into the city to attend Cleveland State," said Katie Calhoon, BA '06, a Mansfield, Ohio native. By all accounts, she's certainly lived an exciting one for the past several years in Cleveland and at Cleveland State. Now she's embarking on what is probably one of the finest moments of her life as she looks to open her own business. And to think she initially wasn't even interested in coming to "the big city."
