Michael Skindell, JD '87
In 2007, Rep. Michael Skindell took what easily could have been a personal tragedy, and turned it into an opportunity for public service. While riding his bike through Lakewood and Cleveland, he was struck by car and thrown from his bicycle, slamming his head against the pavement. He suffered a broken collarbone and rupurted spleen, but knows it could have been a lot worse if he hadn't been wearing a helmet. Not soon after he recovered, he introduced legislation that would require children under the age of 18 to wear helmets.
It's a move that characterizes his four terms as a congressman, where he's advocated for greater consumer protection, affordable prescription drugs and utility costs, environment preservation, economic opportunities for working families and the poor, universal health care and the development of Ohio's renewable energy resources.
In addition to his service in the Statehouse, locally, Skindell serves on the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce, the Lakewood Democratic Club and the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party.
