Cleveland State University offers students with a wide variety of resources to help students reach their academic goals and ensure academic success and graduation. The First Year Advising Office works closely with students to connect them with these resources. The following offices offer support to students at no extra cost (outside of tuition):
TUTORING AND ACADEMIC SUCCESS CENTER (TASC)
TASC offers undergraduate students support in four different formats:
TASC offers tutoring in a small group setting with specially trained and certified tutors that a student can choose to work with once or twice a week in a wide variety of courses.
Sometimes students need to strengthen their “soft” academic skills. TASC offers Success Coaching to help with those skills. Success Coaches work with students to create a personalized plan for both academic and personal outcomes. Assistance offered includes: note-taking, study skills, reading, time management, test anxiety, test taking, organization, stress management, learning style and memory and concentration. Success Coaches do not just focus on academic needs; they also address individual needs experienced as a first year student.
Supplemental Instruction (SI)
SI sessions, attached to a variety of courses are led by a peer or graduate student who attend all course lectures. Following the lectures, the SI leaders hold review sessions for students to compare notes, review important topics and develop study strategies.
Structured Learning Assistance (SLA)
SLA review sessions are built into a course and are worked into a student’s schedule. SLA attendance is based upon instructor assessment and facilitates the review of course material, study strategies, test preparation and collaborative learning.
THE WRITING CENTER
Being able to write effectively is a key component to college success. The Writing Center offers comprehensive services to build and strengthen skills. Services include tutorials that will guide a student through proofreading, planning and drafting assignments as well as academic writing workshops.
THE MATH LEARNING CENTER
The Math Learning Center offers tutoring support for any student enrolled in a math course. They operate primarily on a walk-in basis, and offer extended office hours during the week and on the weekend to ensure that support is available to students.
If regular tutoring hours don’t fit your schedule, CSU offers eTutoring in a variety of disciplines.
