Meet our students and see Cleveland State through their eyes.
Shadie
Sophomore
Hometown: Tokyo, Japan
Major: Computer and Information Science, Finance Concentration, Math Minor
Cleveland State has offered countless opportunities to me as a student and as an individual. Everything from meeting people and making friends to gaining work experience and connecting with high level companies has all been very beneficial for my future. My education at Cleveland State has provided me with many opportunities to gain actual experience in my chosen career. Co-ops and internships are plentiful, and this provides me the opportunity to gain relevant experience that will help when I enter the working world. The campus is as diverse as a United Nations summit. The students are diverse, educated and unlike traditional students. Living in Viking Hall has been a great experience for me. It is great living on campus, where I'm close to classes and being able to get involved in campus activities.

Sophomore
Hometown: North Royalton, Ohio
Major: Music and Communication
The best thing about Cleveland State is its location. It is really great to live in downtown Cleveland. Living downtown has been the best decision of my life. Networking, networking, networking – being downtown has been invaluable for me. It has opened so many doors, from my job at the House of Blues to an opportunity of being an extra in Spiderman III. As a music major, I am on campus all the time, practicing and rehearsing. I also sing the National Anthem for a number of Cleveland State basketball and baseball games. Cleveland State has given me a wide range of options in careers. Whatever I choose to do in the future, Cleveland State has given me a very positive base from which to start a career.

Hometown: Waianae, Hawaii
Major: Communication
With my communication major, I am focusing on journalism and public relations. The location of the campus in a downtown setting offers me many opportunities because of relationships that the School of Communication has made with the business community. This opens internship opportunities for me that I can benefit from since the business community and The Plain Dealer are so close to campus. This also increases my chances of being able to work around my schedule. I believe my Cleveland State education has prepared me for an internship anywhere in corporate America, as well as the opportunity to fully succeed in my chosen career.

Amanda
Sophomore
Hometown: Fairfield, Ohio
Major: Biology
In the biology department, the competition is quite intense. Each class is progressively more difficult and demanding of the students. Living in downtown Cleveland and in the center of a large city provides a student with many different educational opportunities and internships. I hope to be in a biology lab working on my honor’s research project next year. Being a biology major and member of the women’s golf team occupies the majority of my time. I have learned how to study more efficiently. I know that when I attend graduate school in the future I will be well-prepared.

Junior
Hometown: Cleveland, Ohio
Major: Digital Media and Film Production
The best thing about Cleveland State is the positive environment. Everyone wants you to succeed and doesn’t mind helping you out. Transferring to Cleveland State was simple. I received credit for every class I had taken at a local community college. The faculty members are excellent at helping you, not just academically – that’s their job – more on the personal friend and mentor level. As a Digital Media major, I’m working with high-end software and equipment, as well as learning the industry standards. The computer labs and library hours are excellent for students with tight schedules. Students here are talented, both academically and technically. I helped to form a new student organization on campus, the Honors Mellowship. It’s primarily for Honors students but open to everyone. It’s a social outlet and a break from studying. I live at home which is a plus because it saves me money and gives me a break from campus when I feel pressed.

Junior
Hometown: Sodertalje, Sweden
Major: International Business and Finance
The best thing about Cleveland State is its downtown campus in the heart of the real business world in a big city. Being an International Business and Finance major, I think the education I am receiving at Cleveland State has prepared me well for the global business world in which we live. My internship experience was with SCANIA, an overseas-based company in Sweden. Being a captain for the women’s swim team gives me a chance to display my leadership talents and interact with the team while enhancing behavioral skills.

Melissa
Senior
Hometown: Willoughby, Ohio
Major: Communication
My education at Cleveland State is preparing me for a career in communication by providing countless networking opportunities, internship options, and faculty members who are helping me along the way. I transferred my freshman year to Cleveland State, and the faculty made the transition very smooth for me, accommodating my requests and helping me through the advising process. The interaction between students and professors really surprised me; the student-teacher ratio is low so professors are more accessible and helpful than at a larger university where it is hard to even get in contact with your professors. The best thing about Cleveland State is all the activities that are constantly going on around you on this campus. It is surprising how much there is to become involved in outside of the classroom. Living at home allows me to work and save money to pay for my education but I meet really great people and faculty all the time.

Cleveland State has so much to offer its students. I was overwhelmed with the number of student organizations that you can become involved with. The campus offers something for each individual. Cleveland State is an ideal location for my field of choice. My career goal is to become a television news anchor. I know that I will be well-prepared and qualified for this position. I have developed many contacts in the business through the many opportunities that have been presented to me as a student at Cleveland State.

Through Cleveland State I applied for the experimental program. I will be on the hospital floor at the Cleveland Clinic, learning about all aspects of nursing while I am in school. Bjorn
Junior
Hometown: Lund, Sweden
Major: Marketing and International Business
The best thing about Cleveland State is that it offers many valuable opportunities to learn outside the classroom. The leadership and interview skills I have learned will benefit me greatly in whatever my career choice may be after graduation. I transferred here from Lund University in Sweden. I felt I had great support in the transferring process. Cleveland State has taught me how to be independent and resourceful. I feel confident that I will be very well-prepared for whatever life throws at me after graduation.

Major: Master of Public Administration (MPA), concentration in General Management
I received an academic scholarship – the Mercedes Cotner Scholarship – that provided tuition, room and board for my four years of undergraduate education. I am a firm believer that my education at Cleveland State has prepared and equipped me very well for my chosen career. Cleveland State’s academic competition is intense but it opened doors for me. My great educational experience at Cleveland State has inspired me to attend graduate school for a master's degree..

Sara
Senior
Hometown: Mentor, Ohio
Major: Urban Studies
As an Urban Studies major, the benefit of attending college in an urban setting have been great. The city has become my campus. My transferring here went smoothly. I was surprised to learn that all of my professors are masters of their field, involved in their own pursuits to further their expertise for the benefit of their students and their college of study. With the nationally recognized reputation of Cleveland State’s Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs, combined with the opportunities offered to me from my professors and their involvement within the community, I could not ask for better career preparation.

Adam
Senior
Hometown: Parma, Ohio
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Cleveland State’s reputation in engineering is outstanding. All the undergraduate engineering programs are accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET). This means the engineering programs are up to the highest standards. All of my professors are from the engineering field and know what it takes to succeed in the real world. My professors implement in the classroom setting the knowledge and experience they have in their fields. Cleveland State lives up to its reputation of being culturally diverse. It is great making interesting friends from around the world. With the intensity of, and my experience in, Division I Athletics on the Viking swim team, I have learned to deal with the stress and pressure of competing. This experience can be applied to any activity. The engineering program is tough, but I know I’ll be well-prepared for my chosen career when I graduate.
