Summer Scholars Program

Cleveland State has developed an innovative, competitive summer program which enhances the academic success of outstanding juniors or seniors in selected area school districts. The Summer Scholars Program offers six weeks of intensive academic instruction and cultural enrichment activities for students capable of handling an honors curriculum.

Cleveland State faculty lead the program. The program eases the transition from honors-level high school work to honors-level college work and increases the number of students from Cleveland and targeted area high schools who enter and excel in the University’s Honors Program.

In addition to enhancing pre-existing skills in math and English, students discover the importance of attendance, doing homework in a timely manner, and getting assistance when needed for success in college. Students are exposed to the realities of college life and are acquainted with college survival skills and techniques. Students who participate in the program are more prepared for the academic years ahead.

Selection Process

Graduating seniors will be selected from among those who apply for admission to Cleveland State and to the Honors Program. Graduating seniors must indicate their intention to attend Cleveland State for the upcoming fall term. The Honors Program reserves spaces in the program for students who excel in the Summer Scholars Program.

Students who have completed their sophomore or junior year of high school are selected for participation in Summer Scholars based on their performance in an academic competition.

The program is free to students selected for participation. Cleveland State will provide faculty, textbooks and calculators. Participants are responsible for transportation to and from the University each day.

Being a Summer Scholar is a springboard to academic excellence.

Scholarship Opportunities

Graduating seniors who perform ‘A’ level work in the Summer Scholars Program are offered admission to the University’s Honors Program and receive full tuition scholarships which are renewable until graduation based on continued academic excellence. Program participants with a ‘B’ average in the summer program are offered a $1,000 renewable tuition scholarship to Cleveland State upon admission. Renewal is based on maintenance of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average at the University.
