Programs at Cleveland State University

Choose Ohio 1st Scholarship Program

Cleveland State University
Deadline: May 15, 2009 (preference given to applications received by April 30, 2009)

Application Form

Cleveland State University will be offering scholarships for 20 incoming first year students who plan to pursue a major in one of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) disciplines. The scholarships will begin in the fall and cover the 2009-10 Academic Year. They are renewable each year for students who remain in good standing in the program until 2011-12. Students will be selected from among successful participants in one of the university's summer mathematics enrichment programs. Students who place into second semester calculus or at a higher math level do not need to participate in a summer math enrichment program to be considered. Preference will be given to students in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.

The goal of the program is to increase the number of students who graduate with a STEM degree. Success in STEM majors requires a relatively high level of mathematics preparation. Students will be selected for this program from among applicants who are ready to begin at second semester calculus or beyond or who successfully participate in one of our summer enrichment programs designed to enhance mathematics preparedness. One of the objectives of the Summer Scholars Program is to raise the level of mathematics preparedness of incoming first year students so that they are ready to begin their undergraduate career at or near the calculus level. Students who enroll in calculus for free begin college at the level of second semester calculus. This enables them to enroll in university physics their first semester. This improves their general level of preparation and makes it easier to graduate with a STEM degree in four or five years. It is often difficult for even a well-prepared student to complete a STEM major in four years. Nationally, the average time to completion of a bachelors degree (regardless of discipline) is 55 months for students who attend school continuously. Choose Ohio First Success in Mathematics is intended to provide participating students with a support structure that will help them succeed in their major and in their transition to work in a STEM field.

A separate application form is available here. Students should complete the Choose Ohio First application form and apply for one of the summer enrichment programs. Students may contact Ronnette Johnson about enrolling in Summer Scholars or Lauren Davis about Calculus for Free. Both Ronnette and Lauren can be reached at 216-687-5559. Applications will be accepted until May 15th. Preference will be given to applications received by April 30th. Students must be admitted to Cleveland State University.

Choose Ohio First Scholars will enroll in some of their classes as part of the Choose Ohio First Scholars cohort. The COF Scholars will attend colloquia with speakers from STEM fields in industry and academia 3 to 5 times per semester. COF Scholars will have access to supplemental instruction, tutoring and other resources to assist them in completing their STEM degree. Scholarship awards are available for up to $4,700 toward the cost of tuition based on financial need.
