Urban Studies

Levin College of Urban Affairs
The Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University is one of the top 10 urban affairs schools in the nation. U.S. News & World Report’s listing of "America’s Best Graduate Schools 2005" ranked it number two in the nation for its “city management/urban policy” graduate specialty. The College offers 13 degree programs that equip students with the technical and management skills needed to launch careers in fields such as public management, planning, public safety, historic preservation, environmental studies, economic development, and housing. Degree completion programs are available for community college transfer students with A.A., A.A.S., or A.A.B. degrees in human services, health sciences, paralegal studies, police science, emergency management, or fire science.

Urban Studies
As an Urban Studies major, you will learn how to revitalize neighborhoods or to write grant proposals. You will discover how public policy decisions affect everyone’s daily lives. You’ll explore environment-friendly urban development.

Your courses will come from the fields of geography, economics, political science, urban planning, statistics, environmental studies, and public management.

You may choose one or more specializations from the following areas:

  • Urban Planning
  • Urban Management
  • Environmental Policy and Management
  • Historic Preservation
  • Geographic Information Systems


CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates of the Levin College work in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors including human services agencies, healthcare, local government, public safety, community development, housing and environmental advocacy.

A major in Urban Studies is good preparation for law school, or for graduate study in Public Administration, Urban Planning, Environmental Studies, or Urban Studies.

Career Services assistance is available at the college through job postings, government and post-graduate internship opportunities, and a mentoring program. The Cleveland State Career Services Office offers career counseling, interview preparation, and resume review on site. The required urban studies internship gives students practical experience in settings designed to complement their degree program.


PROGRAM
The Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies curriculum takes full advantage of its location in a major urban setting in fulfilling its commitment to urban education, research, and community service.

The curriculum utilizes the resources of the Levin College and other related departments throughout the University for its interdisciplinary academic program. Students pursuing the Urban Studies major take courses and seminars dealing directly with urban problems and their solutions. Web-based and interactive video courses are available.

Here are just a few of the many special opportunities that Cleveland State University’s Levin College of Urban Affairs offers:

  • Internship experience.
  • The Office of Student Services, which is a one-stop destination for advising, course information, and career services.

SAMPLE COURSE OF STUDY
A total of 128 hours is required for the Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies. All degree-seeking students are required to complete a specific number of General Education (GenEd) courses. Students are responsible for ensuring the appropriate selection of courses to satisfy GenEd requirements and are encouraged to consult with their academic advisor regarding the applicability of selected courses.
