The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Classical and Medieval Studies (CLAM) is an interdisciplinary degree supported by the faculty of eight academic areas within the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences: Art, English, History, Modern Languages, Music, Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Dramatic Arts. Students within the CLAM program study the cultures that flourished in the Mediterranean world, Europe, and the Middle East between the eighth century BCE and the fifteenth century CE. CLAM courses encompass subjects ranging from classical literature to the poetry of Chaucer, the religion of the ancient Greeks and Romans to the faith of Islam, the origins of Judaism to the history of medieval Europe, and a broad range of other topics. The CLAM program offers its majors insight into the rich diversity of the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome, medieval Europe, and the Islamic world; appreciation of their shared political, religious, and intellectual traditions; and an introduction to their legacy to the modern world. Our inheritance from this age includes our democratic idealism and republican institutions; the beliefs of Jews, Christians, and Muslims; the sciences of mathematics and astronomy, many enduring styles of art and architecture; and some of the greatest works of world literature. In fact, the very idea of a university first developed in the Middle Ages, and the academic gowns worn by graduates at commencement are a gift of this period.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

During the course of their work, students learn the methodologies and approaches of a variety of different disciplines such as history, philosophy, language study, writing or art. Completion of the CLAM major, therefore, provides students with a solid background in the liberal arts. The major, prepares students for a variety of academic and professional pursuits, including graduate study, teaching, writing, law, religious ministry and museum work, to name a few.

NOTE: The requirements listed below are unofficial. For official requirements, determine your catalog rights, and go to the undergraduate catalog that matches those rights. (The following requirements are ONLY for students whose FIRST semester at CSU is Fall 2011 or Spring 2012. For students who started BEFORE the 2011-2012 school year AND who have been enrolled during at least one of the past three semesters, including summer, please see your undergraduate catalog).

Major in CLAM: The CLAM major requires 36 credit hours of coursework, including at least two courses in each of three of the eight separate academic areas given above. Twenty-four of these credit hours must be at the 300- or 400- level. Students must design, in consultation with their adviser, a coherent program of study in CLAM-designated courses. The CLAM major has no specific language requirement, but students planning to continue their studies in graduate school are strongly encouraged to complete their CLASS foreign language requirement with a classical language (Arabic, Greek, Hebrew or Latin). A CLAM major may write a senior thesis, to be completed within a four-hour independent study (CLM 498-499). Students in the University Honors Program will use the senior their Honors requirements and the thesis may, upon consultation with the appropriate department, be cross-listed with another department.

Minor in CLAM: To earn a minor in CLAM, students must complete a minimum of 18 credit hours in CLAM courses drawn from at least three of the eight separate academic areas listed above. Students should chose these courses in consultation with their adviser. At least three of these courses must also be at the 300- or 400-level.

RECOMMENDED SEQUENCE FOR CLASSICAL AND MEDIEVAL STUDIES MAJOR

A total of 128 hours are required for the Bachelor of Arts in Classical and Medieval Studies. All degree-seeking students are required to complete a specific number of General Education (GenEd) courses. Students are responsible for ensuring the appropriate selection of courses to satisfy GenEd requirements and are encouraged to consult with their academic advisor regarding the applicability of selected courses.
