Fenn College of Engineering

Since 1923, the Fenn College of Engineering has provided a tradition of high-quality undergraduate and graduate education in engineering and engineering technology. In our technological society, engineering is increasingly important in the global marketplace of business and industry. In fact, since the present and future well-being of the metropolitan Cleveland area is intricately linked with continued industrial growth, educated professionals such as engineers and technologists are in great demand.

Chemical Engineering

Chemical Engineers are responsible for the design and operation of processes which accomplish chemical changes. Engineers in this field are involved with petroleum production, pharmaceuticals, paints, synthetic materials (including semiconductors), environmental control, water treatment, plastics, biomedical applications, the development of artificial organs and space-age materials, and working with liquids and gases.

Fenn College’s curriculum in Chemical Engineering prepares students for successful careers in the following fields: project engineer, product development engineer, plant operations, management, research and development and sales, among others.

In addition to mathematics and science courses, chemical engineering students take courses such as chemistry, differential equations, multivariable calculus, thermodynamics, statics, separation processes and fluid mechanics.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Students Chemical Engineering is one of the top ten degrees in demand according to a 2005 NACE Job Outlook Survey. Projected growth in all engineering fields is 3-9 percent through 2012. Engineering ranks among the highest paid professional fields.

• The Cooperative Education Program – Provides excellent opportunities for hands-on, paid work experience. Co-op enables our students to alternate between classes and work in the field at many prominent companies.
• Fully accredited engineering programs
• Small classes and labs (average class size is 17)
• Free tutoring
• Classes emphasize teamwork and communication skills
• State-of-the-art facilities – Over the past five years, large investments have been made in new labs and the renovation of classrooms and office space in Stilwell Hall, home of the Fenn College of Engineering.
• Research Centers - Students have the opportunity to do research with our nationally recognized faculty. Our biomedical certificate program is conducted in cooperation with The Cleveland Clinic.
• Student Support and Extracurricular Activities – Fenn College offers personalized advising and the Engineering Student Enrichment Program, along with 14 student organizations, including the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Tau Beta Pi National Engineering Honor Society, the Society of Women Engineers and the National Society of Black Engineers. Networking events are held with engineering alumni, and two annual career fairs are offered. An Engineering Student Organization Fair and Engineers Week activities are held annually.

A variety of scholarships are available for exceptional students as incoming freshmen and at different class levels. An Honor’s Program is also available for qualified students.
