My focus is developing low-to-moderate priced housing in Johannesburg by preparing town planners to deal with market forces. The public sector suffers from a deficit of unequal knowledge compared with the private sector. The plan levels the playing field by teaching real estate development and finance to graduate students in Town Planning. The curriculum includes parts of three classes, aimed at Black African students with mathematical and analytical deficiencies attributable to inequitable education under apartheid. Teaching will intermingle practice and research. Statistical research on housing markets and policy, research on the real estate practices of indigenous peoples, and redevelopment of contaminated property for housing will complement the teaching program.
