My Fulbright Fellowship occurred in the summer of 1983 (mid-June - mid-September 1983). This was one of the first two-country research grants awarded by the USIA under the auspices of the Fulbright Program. I conducted research in the archives of Paris and London for a book on the history of French diplomacy between the First and Second World Wars.

Two payoffs:

  1. A book, "From Ally to Enemy: The Enigma of Fascist Italy in French Diplomacy, 1920-1940," (Kent State University Press, 1988).
  2. During my six-week stay in London, I shared a residence hall wing with two other international scholars -- another historian from Israel and a political scientist from Pakistan. We quickly became friends, took most breakfasts and dinners together, and enjoyed London together in the evenings -- a memorable example of the spirit of international understanding encouraged by the Fulbright program.
