India, 1985-86

I was a visiting Fulbright Professor of Economics at Mangalore University, Mangalore, India in 1985. I lectured and worked as a resource person to graduate students and faculty in the Economics Department. The students in general were bashful and hesitant to ask questions. The faculty also did not use my talent and expertise to the fullest extent. On the whole the stay was very pleasant.

Mangalore campus was located some distance away from the city in one of the most scenic areas of the state of Karnatak. The public transport to the city was excellent. The state has some of the finest collection of ancient Jain temples in the country. The city was vibrant and stocked with all kinds of goods and amenities.

The next assignment was at Jamia Islamia University, New Delhi. This Muslim university is a national university started by Dr. Zakir Hussain, one of the former presidents of India. I do not think the faculty and students used my services and expertise to my full capacity. Yet, I had an enjoyable time and learned something about the workings of the university and the interaction of faculty and students. I did attract one graduate student from that university to our department in our MA program
