Dimensions of Wellness

Emotional
Emphasizes an awareness and acceptance of one’s feelings and involves the capacity to manage feelings and the ability to cope effectively with stress.
Environmental
Reflects the fact that personal health depends on the health of the planet. Environmental wellness requires learning about and protecting yourself against environmental hazards.
Intellectual
Encourages creative and stimulating mental activities. Uses resources from intellectual and cultural activities in the classroom and community to expand knowledge and improve skills. Involves continued learning, problem-solving and creativity.
Occupational
Involves preparing for work in which one will gain personal satisfaction and find enrichment.
Physical
Encourages cardiovascular fitness, flexibility and strength. The physical dimension also encourages knowledge about food and nutrition and discourages use of tobacco, drugs and excessive alcohol.
Social
Involves the ability to relate well to others both within and outside the family unit. It encourages contributing to a healthy community by supporting a healthy environment and initiating better communication with others.
Spiritual
Involves seeing the meaning and purpose in human existence. The spiritual dimension includes the ethics, values and morals that guide us and give meaning and a sense of direction to life.
