WESLEY A. BROWN LECTURE:
"DISCOVERY OF THE NEW WORLD THROUGH OLD MAPS"

January 29, 2002 in the Treasure Room at the Cleveland Public Library

Join us on Tuesday, January 29th at 6:30 p.m. when the Northern Ohio Map Society and the Cleveland Public Library Map Collection will present a lecture by early map expert Wesley A. Brown. Mr. Brown will investigate man's concept of the shape of the earth from Homer to the 16th century with particular focus on the discovery of the New World. The talk will be illustrated with slides of antique maps collected by Wes over the last 30 years. Two of the maps under discussion are also owned by the Library and will be exhibited that evening in the John G. White Room of the Library.

An investment banker by profession, Wes Brown is an active figure in the rare map world. He currently serves as Co-chair for the Steering Committee of the Philip Lee Phillips Society, a support group of the Map & Geography Division of the Library of Congress, which includes all of the "big U.S. names'" in the history of cartography. A founder of the Rocky Mountain Map Society, he served as its president for 7 years and is still active with that group. A also finds time to serve as a mayoral-appointed Commissioner for the Denver Public Library. He most recently spoke at the 42nd Annual Meeting of the Society for the History of Discoveries. Wes began collecting maps when in high school. His current collection focuses on 2 areas: the earliest world maps up to 1540, and maps depicting the exploration and settlement of Colorado up to the present. With this range of collecting tastes, he's sure to have some words of wisdom, and practical advice for collectors whether it be beginners or veterans.

The lecture will be in the Treasure Room on the third floor of the downtown Main Library Building. Since the event will be after regular Library hours, enter through the doors to the Louis Stokes Wing at the corner of E. 6th St. and Superior Ave. This lecture is free and open to the public - so come and bring a friend who might be interested in maps along with you. It's a chance to hear about and view some rare world maps.
